Brand History

Jim Marshall entered the instrument business in 1962 when he opened the Marshall and Son music store in Hanwell, London. Though focused on drums and drumming, Marshall released a limited run of its first amplifier — the JTM 45 — in September of that year.

Initial customers included Pete Townshend of The Who, who approached Marshall three years later to request a louder model. With this, the Super 100 was born. Featuring 100 watts of power and an 8 x 12" cabinet, the Super 100 immediately set the benchmark for rock guitar amplification.

Marshall amps became even more ubiquitous in the 1980s, as punk and metal bands looked to the crunchy tones of the JCM800 to propel their music. At the same time, the amps themselves — the classic Marshall stack — became a key part of many bands' stage presence.

Today, Marshall continues to innovate, offering a line of classic tube (or "valve," in the British parlance) amps, as well as modern hybrid and digital models that combine classic tones with onboard effects and other features.

Marshall Amps — Beyond the Stack

Marshall's JCM800, JCM900 and other amp heads have been written about extensively over the years — little is left to be said about their world-famous tone and feature set. However, the ubiquity of these amps often means that musicians overlook some of the company's newer offerings.

The Origin series — one of several Marshall guitar amps for sale in our Santa Rosa and San Rafael stores — looks back to Marshall models of the past, while adding a variety of contemporary features, such as a built-in power reduction system that makes it suitable for both stage and studio work and eliminates the need for a separate attenuator.

Also available is the CODE series, an affordable digital modeling amp that offers a range of classic and contemporary tones, as well as Bluetooth and USB connectivity for streaming and connecting to your DAW.
