About Jake Barrett
Jake Barrett has been playing piano and other keyboard instruments professionally since his teen years, and teaching for almost as long. He has performed nationally and internationally with musicians in every genre imaginable, but his specialties are jazz, R&B, rock, pop, and Latin music (especially Brazilian music and salsa). He grew up in Sonoma County, attended high school in Marin, and completed his education at both UC Davis and Columbia University in New York City. He also offers instruction in Portuguese and Spanish for bilingual students. Jake relocated to the Bay Area after several years in Brazil and New York, and currently performs regularly throughout Northern California with a variety of different groups and artists and his own bands.
Jake offers instruction in any genre a student requests, and structures lessons around the development of solid technique, reading skills, musicianship/ear training, and knowledge of harmonic/theoretical principles, no matter what the style. He is especially proficient at coaching musicians who wish to write their own music, perform in jazz/rock/pop styles, and at preparing musicians to get out there and play with others (whether they want to play with a jazz band in a high school program, or a rock band with their friends). Another core element of lessons with Jake—especially with older and more advanced students who wish to pursue music seriously—is the development of fluency and familiarity with a genre’s history, repertoire, and major figures. A background in teaching history at the graduate level at Columbia University aids this aspect of the musical education he offers.
Jake is available for 30-minute, 45-minute, and hour lessons on Saturdays and Sundays. Please consult the scheduling platform on the Bananas at Large website for availability.
